The Festival of Skantha Sahti, held during the perioud beetween the New Moon and the full moon during the month of Aippasi(october-november) is commemorated as a symbol of perpetual destruction of evil by Lord Muruga, the son of Lord Shiva.
Over a period of six days, devotees rise early as 4am during Brahmamuhurtham to medicate to the Lord.On each days, devotees fast while reciting the glory of the Lord with each of the six scriptures in his praise-Thirumurukaatrupaddai,Skantha Sashti Kavacham,Thirupugal,Shanmuga Kavacham, kumarasthavam and Kanthar Kalivenba accompanied by the reading of Kandha Puranam daily.Observing a vegetarian diet comprising of milk and fruits devotees take only a meal a day at night after the recital of the various hymns and epics connected to Lord Muruga.
As the grandeneur and climax of the Skantha Sashti Highlights the defeat of the domen Soorapadma by Lord Muruga, the six days fast marks a pilgrimage of abstinence from evil and wrong doings with the mind and body cleansed through meditation, worship and several others devotional activites. In other words, one may well regard Skantha Sashti not only as a dietary practice that serves to cleanse and purify the body of unwanted toxic elements and diseases, but a journey embarked towards the purification of mind ans soul.
